Purpose of this blog

Personal missionary work as a coordinator for the college students who graduated from Institution Univers in Ouanaminthe, HAITI.

I act as a liaison for those currently in college and their sponsors, until the students have all graduated, whether in USA, Haiti or the Dominican Republic.
As well, I encourage those who have graduated from college but have not yet returned to Haiti, to return to fulfill the purpose of their education, for themselves, their families, their country and most importantly, for God.

THANK YOU...from Institution Univers to YOU!

Thank You for 25 Years!

Institution Univers to celebrate its 25th Anniversary!

What began in 1994 as a one-room kindergarten with 84 children is now a flourishing K-13 school with nearly 2,500 students, a meal program serving 3,000 kids and staff every day, and a medical clinic addressing the needs of a community of more than 100,000 residents. All of this has been made possible ONLY by an amazing God and your loving support and generosity.

Please click here or on the image above to view a short message from our founder, Hugues Bastien.

We will be sharing more about the 25th Anniversary happening next year, but for now please save the date Thursday, March 14, 2019 to hopefully join us in Haiti (or possibly virtually) as we both celebrate the past and look ahead to the future.

We are looking forward to another 25 years and beyond!

We appreciate you!

Jennie's Journey

JENNIES JOURNEY
FROM HAITI TO THE USA FOR WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT
During Sunday School they always talked about helping others who are in need. The cholera epidemic, which killed a lot of people from water contamination, affected my choice of studying water quality management. I knew that it would help others. My school in Haiti, Institution Univers, put me in a program to come to the USA for a college education. Many people in America helped me have a scholarship for my associates degree in Water Quality Management from Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) in Lakewood, Colorado. After I finish my studies, my plan is to go back to Haiti and work with Institution Univers for as many years as I am in the US. Then, I hope to create my own business around water quality management and start helping people. I hope that I will change their lives by providing them clean and safe water to drink.
Why Im in the USA
GETTING INVOLVED
I HAVE A 3.5 GPA & AM ...
  • President of Red Rocks Global Mentors Club
  • Vice President of the International Club
  • Secretary of the Red Rocks Global Mentors
I completed my second year in the United States! I finished one year of English as a Second Language and now my first year of the Water Quality Management associate program. The college now offers a bachelor degree in this program and I hope to extend my stay to complete the bachelors degree. During the school year I worked in the cafeteria to earn my spending money. In Haiti this summer I will teach a class on water at IU.

On my Spring break I went to my home in Ouanaminthe, Haiti with the Christ in the Caribbean mission team. I translated for the team and taught the Haitians that received the 600 water filters how to use them. These water filters will save 700 people from dying from water contamination over 10 years.

In January 2018 one of my sponsors, Venice Presbyterian Church in Florida, invited me to visit their church and share how their scholarship money is helping me on my journey. My hosts took me to see my first alligator!
Sharing My Story
I was also invited to speak for a Rotary Club and a fundraiser for my scholarship in Colorado.
Experiencing America
Thank you to everyone who has given me scholarship money, helped with my clothes , prayed for me and made my trips possible to see the beautiful United States! God bless you!

If you would like to donate to Jennie's education, please send a check with a note attached to the check indicating that the donation is for "GAEL JENNIE FLEURANT - College Scholarship at RRCC".
**Please do not write her name on the check, otherwise it will void the tax deductibility for you.**
Check is to be payable to COCINA, then send the check to:
COCINA, P.O. Box 12695, Columbus, OH  43212.
Let's get Jennie a bachelor's degree, so she can return to Ouanaminthe to begin helping her community!

Thank you and Love,
Marylee

God's opportunities for Institution Univers...

Exploring Opportunities in Haiti

Future partners in economic development?

Earlier this month, a few of us from COCINA and Univers got to spend several days down in the Southwest of Haiti - Grand Goave, specifically - with the wonderful folks from Southland Christian Church and Lifeline Christian Ministries. It was a great opportunity to discuss collaboration, challenges, joys, and generally fellowship with others serving in Haiti.

Prior to going down to Grand Goave, we spent a few days in Ouanaminthe with the folks from Haiti Made (www.HaitiMade.com) to explore the potential for partnering with them to develop a presence in Ouanaminthe. Haiti Made makes a variety of handmade products, including leather goods, jewelry, bags, hats, and more. They loved everything COCINA/Univers is doing in the Northeast and were excited about the opportunity to partner. While in Grand Goave, we were also able to meet with them again to see their workshop located just 10-15 minutes from where we were staying at Lifeline. We got to visit their mission-resort facility, iKondo (https://www.handsandfeetproject.org/trips/), their Grand Goave Children's Village location that's the core focus of the nonprofit Hands & Feet Project (https://www.handsandfeetproject.org/our-work). Haiti Made is a for-profit entity that was spun out of Hands & Feet about 18 months ago; it was originally an economic development component of the nonprofit entity.

Employing 10,000 Haitians in Ouanaminthe.

We are still early in the stages, but I also wanted to share some more exciting news. Over the last few months, COCINA and Univers have been meeting and talking with the leadership at CODEVI (the large industrial park in Ouanaminthe that is mostly known as the "Levi's plant.") It is FAR more than that and includes manufacturing facilities for almost 20 major brands like Under Armor, Banana Republic, Hanes, Champion, and more. CODEVI employs nearly 13,000 people, about 10,000 of which are Haitian - serving in roles anywhere from the manufacturing floor to management level positions.

CODEVI is underway with a 6 year community development plan they're calling a "Micro Park" (see photo above) that is expected to include permanent food stands, an amphitheater, a hospital, vocational school, soccer/sports fields, open community areas, and more. Univers has several opportunities related to the school, the clinic, and the bakery. More to come on this!

Please pray for everyone involved in each of these opportunities. There is great potential for partnerships that could have lasting impact on Univers, Ouanaminthe, and even the entire Northeast Department of Haiti!

We are excited for the many opportunities in front of us!

COCINA Update...

COCINA Global Missions Updated from Christ Community Chapel (with additional notes added by me)

Update from our Ministry Partner in Haiti - Coalition of Children In Need Association

  • Praise the Lord for an amazing Micah 6:8 weekend where we were blessed by the generosity of so many CCCers, not only in their financial support but their sincere interest in our kids and interest in going on a mission trip to Haiti!
  • Praise God for providing the right candidate to be our new clinic medical director.
  • Pray that the Lord will direct our steps in starting new economic development opportunities that will provide real vocational opportunities for our kids after graduation.
  • Pray that we can complete the funding for our truck and ambulance which are much needed in our work in Haiti.
  • Pray for the high school seniors as they have completed the first annual senior retreat April 13th, 14th and 15th to prepare them spiritually for what is next for each one of them. Pray for Pastor Jude and the team that assisted him on the retreat, as they follow up with each student.
